Countries that consume the most chocolate also produce the most Nobel Laureates. The correlation is real. The data checks out. Watch what happens when you hand that to a standard AI:

That’s a toy example. Now, in telecom, swap “Chocolate” for Loyalty Benefi ts (free data, priority support) and “Nobel Prizes” for Lower Churn—same trap, real money.

Highly engaged customers self-select into loyalty programs. So ‘loyalty program → lower churn’ isn’t cause and effect — it’s two symptoms of the same root: engagement. This is confounding—where customer engagement level infl uences both the treatment (loyalty program) and the outcome (churn)—and it is everywhere inside your business data. Enroll low-engagement customers without fi xing engagement, churn won’t budge. You act based on insight from the data. If the insight is based on correlation, the action taken may not be the right action because correlation is not necessarily causation.
If your AI cannot untangle this at the most basic level, it cannot be trusted to drive strategy, allocate budgets, or diagnose what’s breaking inside your operations — regardless of how fluently it presents its findings.
The Layer Your AI Is Missing
This is where most AI implementations stop short — and where the real gap lives.
Standard machine learning models are built to predict. Feed them data, they find patterns, they extrapolate forward. That’s useful in narrow contexts. But it is fundamentally reactive.
